What you should look for in a party entertainer
Finding the right entertainer can be an absolute minefield- there's a lot of choice out there, and then when you've finally figured out who the right person is, you've then got the mammoth task of figuring out what actually makes a good entertainer!
So what should you be looking for? Here I give you 5 super simple pointers to help you find the right people and have a wonderful party!
Every entertainer worth their salt will tell you that they cannot work without Public Liability insurance; this is what covers any performer working with the public and it means that there's a guarantee that a) the person you hire takes what they do seriously, and b) in the unlikely event of something happening at your party, they are fully covered for it. It also means that they're a registered Sole Trader or LTD Company, giving you as the parent peace of mind that everything is above board and the person you've hired is a professional.
Top Tip: If you're unsure, you are well within your right as a consumer to ask to see a copy of any entertainer's Public Liability Insurance- it's better to ask in advance if you're unsure.
2. DBS Check
You probably know this, but anyone working with children absolutely has to have one of these. This is a vital piece of safeguarding and if you ask the company you've booked with for a copy of your entertainer's DBS and they can't provide it, bottom line is you shouldn't book them.
This might be a real obvious one...but I'm gonna say it anyway- to get the best entertainer, you need someone with passion! Have they spoken to you on the phone? Do they sound engaged? Do they sound like they love what they do? The people who deliver the best parties are the ones who really have a passion for great service, fantastic delivery and they really, really love working with children! Trust your gut instinct- if someone sounds right, then go for it!
Communication is a vital part of any business, big or small- and it's just as important for us as it is for you! Speaking to your entertainer will not only ensure you build a rapport and confirm all of the details with them; it's also a chance to ask them questions, and for them to offer advice. Remember, they've been doing this for a while, so take advantage of their experience and ask them anything you want- they are there to help you!
Top Tip: Don't worry if entertainers don't get back to you straight away, as often a lot of them will be very busy. But if you consistently don't hear from them, then don't be afraid to chase! A good entertainment company will pride themselves on getting back to you and making you feel at ease.
5. If it sounds too good to be true....
Okay, so I'm probably going to sound a bit 'sour grapes' here- but I'm going to stick my neck out and say it anyway. If you're being offered a ridiculous package by a party entertainer, for a very cheap price....chances are, it won't be any good. It doesn't take a lot to set yourself up as an entertainer- it's actually creating an amazing product that's the hard part. I hear stories all the time of parents being cancelled on last minute, entertainers turning up late and unprepared, or the parties in general just being really dissapointing. As the saying goes, 'pay peanuts and get monkeys.' And that's not to say the really expensive ones out there are always great either; but you should think carefully before going cheap and cheerful.
